What Is a Duct Rodder?

Also known as a fiberglass conduit or duct snake, a duct rodder is cable pulling equipment mainly used for sewer pipes, cable wires, guide ropes and other wall pipes. The rod is made from extruded fiberglass and powerful resin for tensile strength and flexibility. The outer layer is made from high-density UV-resistant polyethylene, which covers and insulates while sliding on the surface. Its resilient and smooth surface allows the piercer to pass easily through the narrow pipeline.

How to Use a Duct Rodder

For maximum efficiency, consider reading the manufacturer’s manual and understand all the safety precautions. You must follow these instructions to prevent damage. Here are the steps to help you use the duct rodder safely.

1. Position the duct rodder where you want the cable to be threaded. Choose a suitable position with plenty of space for movement.

2. Place barriers to mark your working area. You can put warning signs to mark your job area, especially if you’re working in a public place. This helps prevent people from entering your working area during the threading process. Also, make sure you and your crew are wearing the right protective gear, such as gloves, hats, and safety shoes.

3. Lay your rodder horizontally, making sure to fit all parts of the rodder correctly before it enters the conduit. Release the hand brake from the cage and allow it to spin freely. That way, you can also pull it out easily.

4. Pull the head of the rodder out of the cage to thread the rod off its frame. Be careful to avoid breaking any component. Push it slowly into the conduit while ensuring that it fits the opening. Avoid using any force to move the rodder. Once it has successfully reached the other end of the line, apply the brakes to stop the cage from spinning and use a pull line around its head.

5. Pull back the rod into the cage through the opening. Remove the cable from the duct and store your rodder properly with the rod fully covered inside the cage, and you’re all done!
